Providing Best-in-Class Care & Positive Outcomes for Advanced Liver Disease and Transplantation
The Montefiore Einstein Liver Transplantation Program is an internationally renowned destination for transplants in children and adults with acute or chronic liver disease and liver cancer. Our world-renowned multidisciplinary team of pediatric and adult transplant experts uses advanced diagnostics––including the latest diagnostic imaging technologies––to evaluate donor livers and recipients. This commitment to innovation and expertise results in some of the nation’s highest liver transplant survival rates.
Why Choose Montefiore Einstein?
Our liver transplant survival rates are among the best in the nation, with 100% three-year survival of pediatric and adult recipients of live donor liver transplants. Our three-year liver transplant survival rate in adult recipients of deceased donor grafts is the highest in New York State and exceeds national standards. We specialize in multi-organ transplant procedures with 100% one-year survival of adult liver-heart transplant recipients and 100% one-year survival of pediatric kidney-liver transplant recipients. We are ranked in the top 1% of all hospitals in the nation for complex specialty transplant care according to U.S. News & World Report. We have one of the longest-running National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded liver research centers in the nation.
Innovation to Treat the Most Complex Cases
Our expertise in complex pediatric liver disease includes transplantation in infants less than 1 year old. We were among the first in the Northeast to eliminate the need for liver transplantation through the use of Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS®) liver dialysis technology and remain one of the only hospitals in the Northeast using this state-of-the-art treatment.

Our world-renowned specialists use advanced pre- and post-transplant diagnostics to evaluate donor livers and recipients, including the latest diagnostic imaging technologies such as ultrasound (US), cholangiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), magnetic resonance venography (MRV), magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and scintigraphy. Liver biopsy, as well as biomarkers and analytes, are also used to optimize the diagnosis of rejection after liver transplantation.
We are among the few hospitals in the United States to have a transplant histocompatibility laboratory that is a member of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). Our in-house American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI)-accredited immunology lab offers state-of-the-art histocompatibility, immunology and immunogenetics testing, including human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing and antibody and crossmatch testing. We also offer innovative desensitization programs for patients with high antibody levels and incompatible blood types.
We offer comprehensive management for both acute and chronic liver disease using the latest medical and surgical techniques—ranging from advanced therapies for liver cancer and innovative multidisciplinary care for alcohol-related liver disease to bloodless transplants and normothermic liver preservation. If surgery is recommended as part of your care plan, we’ll coordinate scheduling with our world-renowned surgeons at one of the many locations within our health system.
Our approach allows us to take on the most complex cases, including those turned down by other centers, ensuring patients receive individualized and effective treatment tailored to their unique needs.
Montefiore Einstein uses state-of-the-art imaging technology, ensuring the highest level of accuracy in liver transplant evaluation and care. Our world-renowned specialists have access to a comprehensive suite of diagnostic imaging modalities, including leading-edge US and MRI scans, to provide detailed visualizations of both liver structure and function, which is essential for precise diagnosis, planning and monitoring before and after transplantation.
Our expert team conducts in-depth testing of blood samples, using advanced biomarkers and analytes to provide critical information about liver function and overall health. Such analysis is essential for assessing disease progression, evaluating transplant candidacy and detecting early signs of organ rejection after surgery.
In our ASHI-accredited immunology laboratory, patients receive state-of-the-art immunological and genetic testing, including HLA typing, antibody screening and crossmatch testing. These tests support our innovative desensitization protocols for patients with high antibody levels or incompatible blood types. By investing in advanced, precise blood panel analysis, Montefiore Einstein ensures that every patient receives the safest and most effective care, tailored to their unique needs throughout the transplantation process.
Our leading transplant hepatologists and surgeons evaluate patients with advanced liver disease to determine if organ transplant is a viable treatment option.
Patients who qualify receive ongoing, comprehensive follow-up care from our multidisciplinary team, which includes dedicated transplant coordinators and support staff. Services extend beyond medical management to include holistic resources, such as the Helping Hands Program, nutrition guidance, rehabilitation and emotional support for patients and families in support of long-term postoperative health.
For patients who are not candidates for liver transplantation, we offer a comprehensive advanced liver disease care program, delivering expert medical management, complication prevention, and symptom-directed care through a multidisciplinary team. This ensures that every patient receives the highest level of care, regardless of transplant eligibility, while allowing for ongoing reassessment if clinical status changes.
